Hello June at the Rustic Church

Hello June

Hello June

"bright, blissful rock that shimmers, even throughout its darker moments"

- NPR -

Hello June formed in the hills of Morgantown, WV after core members Sarah Rudy (guitar/vocals) and Whit Alexander (drums) met as tenants of a particularly communal apartment building. Their debut six-song EP, Spruce, fittingly unfolds as if an expression of self-discovery, where languid reflection is never as far from catharsis as it seems. NPR featured their

single "Dance" on Heavy Rotation and hailed the Spruce EP for its mix of driving, indomitable hooks and ethereal, sustained tones, noting its, "blend of bright, blissful rock that shimmers, even throughout its darker moments." In January 2018, Hello June was featured in  NPR Music's first ever Slingshot class, a program where NPR-affiliated stations nominate exceptional emerging bands.

Hello June's self-titled debut album is another shimmering slice of 90s nostalgia that manages to build on the stellar sound of it's predecessor. They announced the new album after premiering its first single "Mars" on NPR Music, who described the single as "a song worthy of national attention... a pulsating slice of 1990s comfort food that will shake the stardust from your heartstrings." Rudy's as assertive as she is compassionate, and you can hear these qualities all over her lovingly crafted, deftly narrated music, which is the world she builds to escape the toils of her daily life. Her hushed vocals endow her lyrics with an irresistible charm while her carefully crafted guitar work builds up single melodies and riffs into surging oceans of distortion similar to Madeline Kenny. This rare combination of guitar-generated atmospherics and lyrical intimacy are at the heart of many of Hello June's tracks, but most notably on the album's two closing tracks "Momma" and "Handshakes." Others, like the album's second single "Candy Rain" and "Stranger," exude that air of relaxed confidence of early Tom Petty.

The Brother Brothers at Rustic Church

brother-brothers-both-1.jpg
Get Tickets

Sunday Nights at Modern Homestead presents The Brother Brothers for an intimate show at our rustic church, a concert and event space.

The Brother Brothers carry the folk tradition for a new generation. Identical twins David and Adam Moss honor contemporary aches with the nostalgic tenderness of another time on their debut full-length album, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, out October 19, 2018 on Compass Records. Their stunning songcraft blends masterfully gentle guitar, cello and five-string fiddle with the sublime sort of two-part harmonies only brothers can carry. Their palpably fraternal stage presence and wonderfully familiar heart have earned repute among a modern folk scene; The Brother Brothers have recently opened for Big Thief, Lake Street Dive, Shakey Graves and more.

The album's title, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, refers to the personal nature of these songs. As David explains, “I think every song on the album is about a person or a character, and in a way, it’s a reflection of ourselves.” For example, “Mary Ann,” written by David, is an encouraging ode to a friend with depression. “Banjo Song,” written by Adam, conveys a conversation with someone who gives up playing an instrument after a hurtful breakup. Though he’s usually on fiddle, Adam plays banjo on the track; throughout the album, David plays guitar and cello.

Recorded at Mark Ettinger’s Lethe Lounge in New York City with producer Robin Macmillan and engineer Jefferson Hamer, The Brother Brothers capably capture a modern snapshot of their surroundings. Yet, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW retains a timeless feel – something that the brothers were aiming for.

“I just want people to listen to it once and want to listen to it again,” David says of the album. “And every time they listen to it, I want them to find something new and in some way relate it to themselves. Whether they're listening to it today or in 40 years, I hope it will make them feel just the same.”

Book Dinner: Red Truck Bakery Cookbook [SOLD OUT]

Screen+Shot+2019-02-05+at+7.42.05+AM.jpg
redtruck-2.jpg

About the Book:
Brian Noyes, owner of rural Virginia’s celebrated Red Truck Bakery, presents house specialties in this collection of popular Southern-style treats. In 85 recipes straight from what Travel + Leisure called one of “America’s Best Small-Town Bakeries” Noyes draws inspiration from local ingredients, weaving them into breakfasts, sweet/savory pies, cookies, cakes, breads, and condiments. He shares secrets of biscuit-making (“the foundation of Southern baking”) and includes the recipe for his sweet potato pecan pie with bourbon, which President Obama praised on his Facebook page and The White House website.

Throughout this inspirational book, Noyes recalls his journey from a small-town baker to national attention via coverage in Esquire, Southern Living, and Oprah’s O Magazine. Noyes’s enthusiasm for baking is infectious, and this volume will prove to be one that bakers turn to time and again.
